How to Safely Find and Reset a Tripped Breaker

If a portion of your home suddenly loses power, there is a good chance a breaker has tripped. This is a common safety response when a circuit becomes overloaded or encounters a fault. The good news is that identifying and resetting a tripped breaker is usually simple—and something most homeowners can handle safely.

Start by Locating Your Electrical Panel

Your breaker panel is typically located in a garage, basement, utility room, or sometimes on an exterior wall. Once you open the panel door, you'll see rows of labeled switches (breakers) that control different areas or major appliances in your home.

Identify the Tripped Breaker

A tripped breaker usually looks different from the others. Instead of being fully in the ON position, it will either sit in the middle or appear slightly out of line. Some breakers also show an orange or red indicator window when they’ve tripped.

Reset the Breaker

To reset a breaker properly, push it all the way to the OFF position first. Then, firmly push it back to the ON position. You should feel it click into place. If it immediately trips again, stop—this may indicate a bigger electrical issue.

Check for Overloaded Circuits

Most tripped breakers happen when too many high-demand items are plugged into the same circuit. Space heaters, hair dryers, microwaves, and vacuums are common culprits. Unplug a few items, then try resetting the breaker again.

When to Call a Licensed Electrician

If the breaker continues to trip, feels hot, or emits a burning smell, leave it OFF and contact a professional. This may indicate damaged wiring, a failing breaker, or a deeper electrical issue. Our team at EZ Electric Inc. can diagnose the problem and ensure your system is safe.
